I wish my mom was more forward thinking when I was a kid. She would always tell me to get off “the Nintendo” and tell me off for spending a perfectly reasonable amount of time (ahem) playing video games.
Well guess what mom, I could’ve made a bajillion dollars playing Counter Strike instead of secretly writing about it from your basement!
Seriously though, Valve just announced that they’ll be going HAM on CS:GO prize pools.
In a hilariously unspectacular fashion, Valve said that they’ll be pledging $1,000,000 to all major CS:GO tournaments in the future. One million!
With over ten million unique players in January alone, CS:GO has rapidly grown in the last couple of years. It’s crazy and refreshing to see CS making such a huge comeback in an FPS landscape dominated by the likes of Call of Duty and Battlefield. Could this success help encourage more tactical shooters to be developed? Probably not, but I’ll keep dreaming.
The first million dollar tournament will be MLG Columbus 2016 which kicks off on March 29. Here’s the breakdown:
- Winner: $500,000
- Finalist: $150,000
- Semi Finalist: $70,000
- Quarter Finalist: $35,000
- Group Stage: $8,750
CS:GO has consistently been the #2 game on Steam for a long time and was even the second most watched game on Twitch in 2015. At this rate, it might reach DOTA 2 levels of popularity one day.
Now please excuse me, I have to go practice my sick 360 no scope MAC 10 stratz.
